It was easy to scale up and draw a full property layout.
I thought it did what it should intuitively, and I think most would find it a good mix of easy to use with enough detail and flexibility.īeing a landscape designer, I was inspired to try using Homestyler to site a house properly within it’s property lines and then do a basic landscape plan. No brand name, rendered furniture and no kitchen layout options. Pros: Very easy to use for laying out a single, rectangular room - foolproof.Ĭons: Can only draw one room at a time in a rectangle (so no bump-outs or an entire floor plan) and 2D only. I prefer not to have the distraction of rendered colors and textures etc - it distracts me from focusing on the design layout itself, but that’s a personal preference. The furniture is in basic 2D grayscale rather than brand name specific items, which I actually prefer, but others might not. The rooms can be categorized as bedroom, living room etc and then room-appropriate furniture appears for you to drag, drop, rotate, rescale etc. I think this is a big point in Plan Your Room’s favor since the initial drawing of the walls was the most challenging part for some of the other apps, and you don’t want to discourage people up front. Or if you click on “New” you just input your room dimensions and it draws it for you. Clicking on them immediately reveals that they’re easily changed up to your specific dimensions. The homepage itself comes with ready-made walls already drawn. If you are designing a single rectangular room, this one may win for overall simplicity and ease of use. (Hint - you can increase the watch speed by clicking the gear icon and changing the Playback Speed.) Has name brand furniture, but no info beyond dimensions.Ĭheck out the video demo below. You can use the software without joining, but once you click “Save”, you have to either join or you lose your drawing as it stays stuck on the registration pop-up. It has a lot of furniture to choose from including branded items from Midcentury Saarinen Tulip Chairs to Magnolia Home and many others, but their dimensions can’t be adjusted if they don’t match an item you’re considering. It’s 3D seems a bit more limited than other apps - it allows you to take a 3D “photo” but I didn’t see a way to drop yourself in the 3D space to move through and get a feel for it in 3D.
it doesn’t show a measure increment as I move along a line. To site french doors 6’ in from a corner for example, It seems I would have had to draw an additional “wall line” to 6’, drop the door in at that point so it could Snap to it, and then delete the 6’ wall line.

While popping in doors and windows was easy, I found some limitations when trying to actually dimension door placement. Many architectural details from wainscoting to track lighting are readily available.
It doesn’t have a way to change dimensions of the furniture pieces. Then you can add in scaled furniture from existing collections categorized by room type or furniture type.įind pieces that have similar dimensions to what you’re considering. Start drawing your walls according to their dimensions. It’s easy to draw walls and then to add in doors and windows. Plan view will let you see how well your furniture fits. Roomstyler was the first app I tried, and it was very easy to get started with:įrom the Roomstyler homepage, navigate to “Tools - 3D Roomstyler” and you can easily draw your room in 2D plan view (overhead view looking straight down) and then automatically generate a 3D image.
